Background of the Study

School feeding programs (SFPs) have been implemented worldwide to improve child nutrition, enhance school attendance, and boost academic performance. In Nigeria, the National Home-Grown School Feeding Program (NHGSFP) was introduced to provide nutritious meals to primary school children, particularly in food-insecure regions such as Kano State. The program aims to alleviate hunger, improve school enrollment, and contribute to students’ cognitive and physical development.

Despite the potential benefits of school feeding programs, concerns have been raised regarding their effectiveness in achieving desired outcomes. Issues such as inadequate funding, poor meal quality, irregular food supply, and corruption have been reported in various states, leading to inconsistent program impact. Additionally, there is limited empirical evidence evaluating the effectiveness of school feeding programs in Kano State, particularly in terms of student attendance, nutritional status, and learning outcomes. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of school feeding programs in Kano State by examining their implementation, impact, and challenges.

Statement of the Problem

School feeding programs are designed to address malnutrition and improve educational outcomes among children. However, in Kano State, there are concerns about the adequacy, sustainability, and impact of these programs. Reports suggest that some schools experience food shortages, while others provide meals with insufficient nutritional value. Additionally, the extent to which the program has influenced school enrollment, attendance, and academic performance remains unclear. There is a need to critically assess the effectiveness of school feeding programs in Kano State to determine their impact and identify areas for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of school feeding programs on student enrollment, attendance, and academic performance in Kano State.

  2. To assess the nutritional quality and adequacy of meals provided under the school feeding program.

  3. To identify challenges affecting the implementation of school feeding programs in Kano State.

Research Questions

  1. How do school feeding programs influence student enrollment, attendance, and academic performance in Kano State?

  2. What is the nutritional quality of meals provided in the school feeding program?

  3. What are the challenges affecting the effective implementation of school feeding programs in Kano State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. School feeding programs significantly improve student attendance and retention rates.

  2. The meals provided in the school feeding program meet the recommended nutritional requirements for children.

  3. Implementation challenges negatively affect the success of school feeding programs in Kano State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on public primary schools in Kano State that participate in the school feeding program. Limitations include variations in program implementation across schools and potential biases in self-reported data from school administrators and students.

Definitions of Terms

  • Nutritional Adequacy: The extent to which meals meet dietary requirements for healthy growth and development.

  • Student Retention: The ability of schools to keep students enrolled throughout their academic journey.
